1. Introduction

StoryReader – Learn English ("the App") is a free reading and vocabulary-learning application. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App accesses, how it is used, and how it is stored. The App does not require user registration and does not collect personal information.

2. No Account Required

StoryReader – Learn English does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number. There is no authentication system. All your data is stored locally on your device.

3. Data Stored on Your Device

The App stores all user data locally on your device using encrypted local storage (Hive). This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to export a backup. The locally stored data includes:

  • Reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, and notes for each story
  • Saved vocabulary words with definitions, phonetics, examples, CEFR level, and review schedules (SM-2 spaced repetition)
  • App preferences such as font, theme, reading mode, TTS speed, and language settings
  • Reading statistics including daily reading time, words read, reading streak, and comprehension quiz scores

You can export your data as a JSON backup file at any time using the in-app backup feature and share it via your device's sharing options. You have full control over your data.

4. Device Information

The App generates an anonymous device identifier used solely to manage your local learning profile. This identifier stays on your device and is not transmitted to any server. No personally identifiable information is derived from it.

5. Third-Party Services & Network Access

The App requires internet access for certain features. When you use these features, your requests are sent to the following third-party services:

  • Project Gutenberg (gutendex.com) — Browse and download free public-domain books
  • Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev) — English word definitions, phonetics, and audio pronunciation
  • MyMemory Translation API (mymemory.translated.net) — Online word and sentence translation across 10+ languages
  • API Ninjas Thesaurus (api-ninjas.com) — Synonyms and antonyms lookup

The App also uses Google ML Kit for on-device (offline) translation, which processes text locally without sending data to external servers. Each third-party service has its own privacy policy, and we encourage you to review them.

6. Advertising

The App displays advertisements through Google AdMob. AdMob may collect and use device information, advertising identifiers, and usage data to serve personalized or non-personalized ads. Google's privacy policy governs how this data is handled: https://policies.google.com/privacy

On iOS, the App requests your permission via the App Tracking Transparency framework before using your device's advertising identifier for personalized ads. You can decline this request and still use the App with non-personalized ads. No data collected by AdMob is sold to third parties by us.

7. App Permissions

The App requests only the permissions necessary for its functionality:

  • Internet Access — Required for downloading books, dictionary lookups, translations, and displaying ads
  • Notifications (Android 13+) — Used to send vocabulary review reminders at your chosen time; fully optional
  • File Access — Used only when you import TXT or PDF files from your device
  • Photo Library (iOS) — Used only when exporting backups or saving highlights; the App does not access your photos otherwise

8. Children's Privacy

The App is suitable for users of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since the App does not require registration and stores data only on the device, no personal data of any user, including children, is transmitted to our servers.

9. Data Security

All user data is stored locally on your device using Hive encrypted local storage. Since we do not transmit or store your data on any server, the security of your data depends on your device's security measures. We recommend keeping your device software up to date and using a screen lock.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
